NumisMedia Weekly Market Report

Current News and Analysis of the

United States Rare Coin Market

1907 $20 Gold Ultra High Relief Brings $3.6 Million

March 1, 2021

A major blizzard can’t stop a good auction platform, even if it was delayed a week. Heritage Auctions held their February Signature Sale a week later than originally scheduled because of the terrible winter storm that hit Texas and several other states; but it was well worth the wait. The sale was held at the Heritage Dallas Headquarters and as expected there were numerous rarities that attracted very competitive bidding and brought strong results.
1907 $20 Gold St. Gaudens Ultra High Relief Lettered Edge certified by NGC PR68

This is one of approximately 15 known coins from an original mintage of just 22. None of the coins were offered to the general public with most going to high ranking government officials including President Theodore Roosevelt. The coin in this sale brought $3.6 million. There are a total of 5 coins certified in this grade with only one higher in PR69. The PR69 last sold at auction in a Stack’s Bowers sale back in June of 2012 for $2.82 million. This PR68 last sold at auction in a 2003 Goldberg Sale for just $1.15 million. The current NumisMedia Market value is $3.15 million and will need an adjustment.
