ANA Preview of Rarity Part II: 1913 Liberty Nickel Takes Center Stage

In part two of our ANA World’s Fair of Money preview, we take a look at some of the highlights from the other co-official auction, hosted by Stack’s Bowers Galleries. Included in this sale are some incredibly distinctive rarities and several well-known collections which contain some of the finest known coins within their respective series.

One of the top attractions from this Stack’s Bowers sale will surely be the 1913 Liberty Head Nickel graded PCGS PR66 with the CAC approval and is the finest known coin. It comes to auction from the family of Dr. William Morton-Smith and is the very same coin previously owned by Louis Eliasberg, Sr. This was the first coin to achieve the million dollar price tag back in 1996 when it sold for $1,485,000 in a Bowers & Merena Sale. With just five coins total certified by PCGS and NGC, opportunities to acquire a rarity like this are rare indeed. This will certainly be the centerpiece of the Rarities Night session at this ANA event.

The current FMV for the 1913 Liberty Nickel in PR66 is $5,437,500; with the market well into the summer months, enthusiasts are very interested to see what it sells for this time around. The other four coins that have been certified are XF40 & AU55 by NGC and PR63 & PR64 by PCGS. The PR63 is the lowest value listed by NumisMedia at $3,375,000 FMV; in 2006, the PR63 was just $2,000,000 and the PR66 was at $5,000,000 FMV.

One of the more important coins in this sale is the 1796 Draped Bust Half Dollar with 15 Stars in NGC MS63. This coin, originally from the Norweb Collection, has a current FMV of $418,750. There were only 3,918 coins originally minted of the three varieties and the current population reports show a mere 8 coins for the 15 Stars variety in Mint State, PCGS and NGC each show one certified in the highest grade of MS64. In all of the circulated grades of G4 through AU58, there are a total of only 68 coins. In early 2006, the FMV for the MS63 was $203,130 and advanced to $418,750 by 2010, a value that has not changed since.

The Thaddeus A. Tatum Collection is offering a 1795 Large Cent Jefferson Head Plain Edge that is sure to attract some aggressive bidding. This coin is PCGS F15, the only one certified in this grade; there are only 17 certified in all circulated grades from G4 through the highest grade of VF30. This Large Cent was not minted by the government but by a private contractor in order to limit government funding of the Mint operation. In early 2010, the FMV for the F12 was $32,190 and today it is $58,130; this coin should command a strong premium in this sale.

The Stack’s Bowers Sale also includes a 1793 Flowing Hair Wreath Cent Vine & Bars in PCGS MS64+ BN which has a current NumisMedia Plus+ value of $162,000. The original mintage for the Wreath type was 63,353, and even though there are 33 coins certified in MS64 and higher (one is certified PCGS MS69), it is still a rare coin by all rights. Demand for this coin has been steady throughout the years; back in 2006, the MS64 had an FMV of $45,630. This coin was previously sold in the Americana Sale of January 2013.

Another exceptional rarity available, the 1895 O Morgan Dollar in PCGS MS66 is just 1 of 4 certified in this grade and there is just one higher at MS67. This is a rare date in all Mint State grades, but the top Registry collectors will certainly not want to miss this opportunity. The current FMV is at $425,000, and judging by some of the rare Dollars that just sold at Sotheby’s, this may be on a few collector radars. This coin was priced at over $400,000 back in 2006, but with only four coins certified in this grade, another one coming on the market any time soon is not likely.

There is also a nice selection of Private and Territorial Gold coins available including the 1830 Templeton Reid $2½ Gold in NGC MS61 Rarity-6, the highest certified grade by either service, and 1 of only 3 coins certified in all Mint State grades. Up for auction once again, the 1849 Pacific Company $1 Gold in NGC MS61, listed as a Rarity-8, was originally sold from the Riverboat Collection of 2014. This is the only coin certified in this grade and, in fact, is the only one certified in any grade.
