NumisMedia Weekly Market Report
April 28, 2008
Bust Quarters in Demand
Bust Quarters are showing strength much like other areas of Early Type. The Capped Bust issues from 1815 to 1828 have been solid for quite awhile but now dealers are raising their buy prices in an effort to locate nice coins for their customers. This week's Wholesale Price Guide lists numerous increases for Extra Fine through the Mint State grades. In addition, there is still healthy demand for issues that remain unchanged.
There is always demand for Indian and Lincoln Cents, Buffalo Nickels, and Mercury Dimes. The key dates continue to receive the most attention, with many active at present levels. Dealers have a difficult time keeping them in stock because demand is quite intense. However, a very few issues seem to be tentative at current levels. One such example is the 1937 D Three-Leg Buffalo Nickel. Some dealers have more in stock than normal and demand appears somewhat lethargic for grades below MS62. This could be because prices have increased so much over the last couple of years.
Demand for Morgan Dollars remains firm. Most dealers across the country need multiples of coins in specific dates and grades. Not only are the generic dates active, but also the better dates in MS65 and MS66 are on the rise. Of course, strict grading is necessary and below average coins for the grade will not command the new levels. Deep Mirror Prooflike dates are advancing at a record pace. A few market makers have customers looking for the rarest dates in the highest grades and wholesale prices are increasing rapidly.
