Early Rarities and Carson City Gold in Demand
The market for early rarities continues to be vigorous as long as the coins are accurately described with no obvious problems for the grade. Eye appeal continues to attract premium prices for such rarities. This week's HD Wholesale Market Price Guide has plenty of increases for many issues from the early 1800's to the 1870's. Buyers for Bust Silver and Gold know they have to be very competitive if they are going to acquire any of the coins that come into the market.
Higher buys for Bust Half Dollars appear to be more specific by date and grade this week, although the majority of market makers maintain their current buys for the more common issues. The same case can be made for Bust Dollars. Most of the coins that come onto the market are quickly absorbed when the prices are near present wholesale levels.
Carson City Gold is extremely hot at this time. There are numerous increases for most grades in the $5 and $20 denominations. It looks like the demand for $10 Carson City Gold is active at present levels. Carson City Gold is a specialty area that attracts numismatic historians. Plenty of lore surrounds the Wild West and once buyers catch the fever it evolves quickly. Carson City Gold will typically have excessive bagmarks, so when coins have some original color and are clean, they will command very strong prices relative to current prices.
