NumisMedia Weekly Market Report
February 16, 2009
Bargain-Hunting Shaping Market
Demand in the wholesale market for rare coins remains steady although buyers are now being quite selective. In addition, there are not as many buyers in this market as there were at this time last year; wholesale prices have declined in some areas as a result. Dealers are not very aggressive because they already have extensive inventories and there is simply not enough money in today's market to support some of the current series. While astute numismatists realize rarity and quality combine for potential profits, recent auctions indicate an overabundance of these coins for today's economy.
This week's LD Wholesale Market Dealer Price Guide shows numerous changes in most series. Many of the advances are for low census coins in higher grades that do not appear in the market very often. On the other hand, some rare key dates have fallen because the number of coins in the market creates less competition for each coin. There have been numerous 1909 S VDB Lincoln Cents coming into the market causing wholesale prices to fall in MS64 and 65, in both Red & Brown and Red.
Buffalo Nickels and Mercury Dimes continue to suffer setbacks. The 1917 S Buffalo fell to a Market price of $1,775 in MS64 while the 1927 S dropped to $3,475 in MS64. In Mercury Dimes, the 1921 declined in MS66 Full Bands to $6,175 and the 1925 S decreased to $3,275 in MS65 Full Bands. Bust and Seated Half Dimes, Dimes and Quarters remain attractive to collectors but they are still bargain-hunting at this time. Standing Liberty Quarters are more plentiful than usual and dealers are consistently discounting coins in order to create sales.
