New Lincolns Hit the Market
This year the U.S. Mint is celebrating the life of Abraham Lincoln, one of the most popular individuals in American history, with the release of the newly designed Lincoln Cent and Lincoln Commemorative Dollar. The new Lincoln's are available on the U.S. Mint's website, www.usmint.gov. These coins have attained instant popularity in certified grades and have become extremely marketable. The Lincoln Cents are very volatile, while the Dollars are selling in a modest range. The Lincoln Dollar is trading at a Market of $55 in MS69 and $100 in MS70. In Proof, they are selling at $45 in Ultra Cameo 69 and $150 in PR70.
The overall market remains very selective at present Wholesale levels. There is a continued downtrend for coins that have high populations in specific grades. Buyers are looking for low population coins or discounted coins with eye appeal in the higher pop issues. This week's LD Wholesale Market Dealer Price Guide lists a variety of adjustments throughout. Specifically, in the Half and Large Cent series there are many increases for hard to find dates. Copper is always popular and many of these early dates are very difficult to find with damage-free planchets.
An extremely rare 1796 No Pole Half Cent in Fine and Very Fine increased to a Market of $52,500 and $63,500, respectively. The 1793 Lettered Edge Large Cent increased to $19,650 in AU50. In contrast, the 1795 Lettered Edge Large Cent in AU53, 55, & 58 fell this week due to discounted sales over the past few weeks.
The Market prices have also dropped for the 1856 Flying Eagle in various grades. We have seen several of these coins discounted in the past month. Although this is a very popular coin, when too many of them come onto the market in a short period, buyers can be selective and the less eye-appealing coins will trade at discounts of previous levels.
