NumisMedia Weekly Market Report

June 27, 2011

Rare Coins Showing Stability

The metals may have suffered losses this past week but overall coin market prices appear to be steady. Even though sales may be lower than previous months, collector coins are still very active at present Market levels. In addition, better dates or premium quality coins will command prices in excess of reported prices. Collectors are keeping an eye on the market for coins dated prior to the 1930's, within most series, in case specific coins become available at fair prices.

One series that is generally overlooked is Seated Half Dimes. It is a long series, as are other Seated denominations, but it is a small coin. For various reasons, collectors shy away from smaller odd denominations. However, in this week's LD Wholesale Market Dealer Price Guide, there are several advances in this series. Moreover, most of the increases are for circulated coins. The 1838-1840 Stars with No Drapery type coin increased in AU50 to AU55. It also jumped in MS64 up to $565 Market. The Stars Obverse type coin advanced in most grades from AU50 to MS62, with the MS62 now at a higher $160 Market. The rare 1844 O climbed to $3,400 and $4,500 in AU58 and MS60, respectively. Keep in mind that these must be no problem coins for the grade to command current prices.

Seated Dimes and Quarters also showed some upward movement for various dates and grades. The 1875 CC Seated Quarter in MS65 is now higher at $28,500. The 1859 in MS65 is up to $4,625. Full Band Mercury Dimes are beginning to show a spark of interest as a few better dates increased this week. The 1919 D in MS64 FB moved up to $4,050 and the 1921 in MS66 FB is $5,650. A tough date to locate is the 1942/41 D in high grades. The MS64 FB shows a higher Market of $8,500 this week. Standing Liberty Quarters seem to be picking up some steam with various dates on the rise, especially in the Full Head chart.
