NumisMedia Weekly Market Report
October 3, 2011
Volatility Creating Opportunities
We have seen many key dates advance over the last several years and, while some specific dates have seen profit taking this last year, they continue to attract buyers. The 1932 D and S Washington Quarters in Good through Very Fine have fallen lately but buyers are still looking to add them to collections and inventories if the price is right for the grade. The same can be said for the 1938 D Walking Liberty Half Dollar in the same grades. Part of this can be attributed to a lack of new collectors entering numismatics. With a tough economy, beginning collectors are spending more of their time looking for jobs rather than coins.
The metals may be down from the recent highs, but this just creates more opportunities for investors to add to their holdings. Silver Dollar bags are now trading among dealers at $26,000 for VG coins. A few weeks ago, these bags were in the $35,000 range. Silver bags are trading just under $22,000 per bag versus $30,000 in the last month. Proof Gold Eagles in the original government packaging are wholesaling at $1,840 per ounce and the 2009 UHR is still strong at $2,550 for MS69's.
In this week's Moderns Wholesale Market Dealer Price Guide just about all the adjustments are downward, especially in the metal related series. Gold, Silver, and Platinum Eagles are all lower than they were in our last report. MS69 Silver Eagles have a current Market of $46, while the $50 Gold Eagles are trading at $1,640 in MS69. The Modern $5 and $10 Gold Commems are lower in most grades as well as the Spouse Gold. Some of the better dates have held up in the MS69 and 70 grades.
