1854 S $2 ½ Gold Up For Auction in Pittsburgh
In conjunction with the upcoming ANA National Money Show, Heritage Auctions will conduct an important sale on October 13 - 16. A rare 1854 S $2 ½ Gold in VF35 certified by PCGS will be offered and is sure to create excitement. The majority of the 246 original minted coins are only found in VF to XF. Also in this sale, collectors will find rare New Orleans minted $20 Gold; of special interest will be the 1852 O, 1854 O, and the 1856 O. Competition should be fierce for all of these coins.
In early trading this morning the metals are indeed exchanging at higher levels. Gold is up to $1,670 and Silver is $32.10. However, in the last week, Proof Gold Eagles in the original government packaging have fallen to $1,785 per ounce. These were $1,840 last week at this time. Proof Silver Eagles are down to $56. The 2009 UHR continues to rise under very competitive dealer activity. The MS69 is now up to $2,650 wholesale.
The overall market for rare coins is steady at current Market prices. In this week's LD Wholesale Market Dealer Price Guide there are few changes based on current dealer buys. When dealers offer nice coins on Teletype, they are quickly sold if the prices are even close to the Market price. Half Cents and Large Cents are highly sought after from specialist dealers and collectors. Problem-free coins, especially varieties will sell very quickly. The 1796 Half Cent No Pole is higher in Fine to Extra Fine with the latter now at $110,000 Market.
