Rarities Shine at Heritage ANA Sale

Dealers were less than enthusiastic about the final results for the just completed Pittsburgh ANA National Money Show, yet, the Heritage Sale found several bright spots. Expensive rarities continue to attract advanced collectors. The extremely rare 1854 S $2 ½ Gold sold for $253,000; this coin grades VF35 by PCGS. The original mintage was 246 coins of which only 14 total have been certified by NGC and PCGS. It is very likely that this number is overstated by the fact that some coins have been resubmitted to both services.

One of the finest known 1926 S Buffalo Nickels sold for $115,000 in NGC MS66. There are none grading higher and PCGS has only graded coins as high as MS65. Another great rarity is the 1807 Draped Bust Quarter in NGC MS66. This coin is tied for second finest known and it brought $115,000. There were several U.S. Gold coins that attracted competitive bidding. A 1796/5 $5 Small Eagle in NGC MS62 realized $207,000. This coin was originally housed in the Eliasberg Collection. Two of the toughest dates from the New Orleans Mint were the highlights of the sale. The 1854 O $20 Gold in PCGS AU55 sold for $431,250; there are only 31 coins total in all grades certified by NGC and PCGS. In addition, the 1856 O $20 Gold in PCGS XF45 was hammered at $276,000; this has even fewer certified by the two services at 23 coins in all.

In this week's HD Wholesale Market Dealer Price Guide there are scattered increases throughout the Bust and Seated Halves charts. Buyers are looking for specific dates and, when they are available, they will usually bring slight premiums if they are above average for the grade. The 1822/1 Bust Half in MS64 increased to $6,450 Market and the 1836 Reeded Edge in AU58 moved higher to $5,325. Within the Seated Half series, there are several AU coins that have advanced. Many of these better dates are very difficult to locate and higher prices are typically the result. The 1844 O in AU58 is higher this week at $475 and the 1847 O in the same grade is now $500. Also on the rise is the 1872 CC in MS62, now at $26,500.
