NumisMedia Weekly Market Report
October 24, 2011
Early Proof Lincoln Cents on the Move
This past month we have seen a fairly tight range of Gold prices. The high has been $1,682, while the low was $1,617. This is a welcome change for most investors who have seen the market adjust as much as $100 in one day in previous months. Buyers are still quite interested in adding to their holdings, however, most are waiting for some kind of sign. The problem is when the right time becomes obvious, buyers will have missed the bottom of the current market. The opportunities are there but timing is the key issue. Make sure you check current prices prior to making any long term commitments.
The coin market is waiting anxiously for the latest offering from the U.S. Mint. This week the 2011 25th Anniversary Silver Eagle set will go on sale. Dealers are already willing to pay as much as $100 over for these sets and they want large quantities. This is supposed to be a very limited mintage as long as the Mint maintains their current stance. As far as current wholesale prices for the one ounce Silver Eagles, the proof in the original government package is now at $57, while the Gold one ounce is $1,810. Silver Bags are trading at $22,750 and VG Silver Dollars are back up to $27,500 per thousand coin bag.
Early Proof Lincoln Cents are showing positive movement in this week's Moderns Wholesale Market Dealer Price Guide. These are not only rare coins, they are very popular amongst dealers and collectors. In many cases, buyers are not as concerned about color as they are about eye appeal. Nonetheless, fully Red gems will command quite a premium when available. The 1916 in PR67 Red advanced to $32,500 this week and the 1915 in PR67 Brown jumped to $4,250. The most popular date in any Proof grade is the 1909 VDB; even the lowest grades are over $3,000 if you can find them in the marketplace. In PR64 in Red & Brown is now at $17,750. The recently completed Heritage Sale in Pittsburgh contained many fine coins from 1909 through 1916.
