NumisMedia Weekly Market Report
March 5, 2012
Metals Reverse, Present Buying Opportunities
A week ago the metals were very strong and moving higher. By mid-week they took a pounding with Gold dropping over $80 in one day. Buyers became very weary and backed off even though this may have presented a great opportunity to add to their holdings. Gold is currently just above $1,700 and Silver is $34. Many dealers feel that buyers are waiting to see which direction the metals are headed from here.
Modern issues and strictly bullion coins continue to play a role in rare coin activity. With so many buyers trading in bullion coins, many numismatic coins are being ignored. Circulated Silver dollars in VG and higher are steady at $28,650 per bag even though Silver is down $3 in the last week. The 2009 UHR remains steady in MS69 at $2,700 Market, while the P/L's and Early Releases are difficult to locate at current levels. We recently added the 2011 Silver Eagles 25th Anniversary coins to the online price guide. All five coins are in demand with the 2011 S and the Reverse Proof the most popular.
In this week's LD Wholesale Market Dealer Price Guide we found very few changes across the charts. The market appears steady for most coins within the series from Half Cents through Standing Liberty Quarters. Most of the trading activity we have monitored the last couple of months has taken place around current levels. One series that seems to be improving is Buffalo Nickels, especially those dates prior to 1930. With prices having fallen over the last two years, it looks like buyers are starting to take an interest in properly graded coins at today's levels. Common date Full Band Mercury Dimes have gotten cheap and it looks like there is demand for MS65 and MS66 coins now.
