NumisMedia Weekly Market Report

April 16, 2012

Collectors Seek Quality Early Coinage

The coin market mirrors the current economy. Those with discretionary income are buying coins and bullion while those without the extra cash are either staying out or selling into a lackluster market. These two divisions show why the market is weak for coins under $1,000 and stable for higher value coins. In addition, the market for coins after the 1930's is comprised of more sellers than buyers at this time, especially if the coins are not relative to Gold and Silver.

The market for Early Type Coins remains steady as reported in this week's Wholesale Market Dealer Price Guide. Bust Half Dimes and Dimes from 1794 to 1807 attract buyers for just about any grades as long as the coins are problem free. Most sales lately have been around the current Market price. Much of the activity for Bust Half Dimes and Dimes from 1809 to 1837 has been for grades MS63 and higher. However, we are still finding steady demand for the lower grades at current levels.

Bust Quarters are high on want lists in grades MS63 and higher. Collectors and dealers are looking for coins that may have been considered Type for the series in the past. The census reports reveal few of these coins are available due to the number of coins certified in specific grades. For example, the 1821 Bust Quarter had an original mintage of 216,851 coins but the census reports show that there are only 19 coins certified in MS65 and higher grades. These are the kinds of coins that long term collectors show interest in as they tend to have great potential in future major auctions. The MS65 Bust Quarter is up this week to $16,500 Market.
