NumisMedia Weekly Market Report
1913 Liberty Nickel on the Block
April 8, 2013
While we have reported that the majority of business on the Teletype systems has been bullion related, it has not gone unnoticed that, for quite some time, quality collector coins have been leaving the marketplace. Hard core collectors have been putting away better dates and premium quality coins for many years. These PQ coins are now labeled as + or CAC and, in many cases, are being certified and then placed back in the vaults for future sales or major auctions. Many of the Bust or Seated coins have not traded in some grades for many years so it is very difficult to determine current values until they come up for auction.
It may not be a Bust or Seated coin but one example of a rarely traded coin is the upcoming sale of the 1913 Liberty Head Nickel. This is the Walton coin that was lost for 40 years before being authenticated in 2003. It will be auctioned at Central States later this month by Heritage Auctions. This coin is certified by PCGS as PR63 and we have a current FMV of $2,500,000. The price has not been updated in quite some time and pre-auction estimates are considerably higher. This is just one of five coins minted and potential buyers know that this may be a once in a lifetime opportunity to own this rarity.
In this week's LD Wholesale Market Dealer Price Guide many Copper prices are higher. From Half Cents through Lincoln Cents buyers are looking for coins in all grades as long as they are nice for the grade. The following is a partial list of coins advancing this week.
