NumisMedia Weekly Market Report
Power Coins Rising in Value and Disparity
April 29, 2013
By now everyone is aware of the big news of the week that Heritage Galleries sold the 1913 Liberty Head Nickel for $3,172,500. The Walton coin was jointly purchased by Jeff Garrett and Larry Lee, two long time coin dealers, at Central States on Platinum Night. But this was just one of many great rarities that changed ownership on the night. The following list of highlights is nothing short of astonishing.
1793 Liberty Cap Large Cent | XF45 | PCGS CAC | $176,250 |
1794 Large Cent Head of '94 | MS66RB | PCGS CAC | $205,625 |
1804 Bust Dime 14 Stars Rev | MS63 | NGC | $367,188 |
1839 Seated Quarter No Drapery | PR65 | NGC | $411,250 |
1796 Bust Dollar Sm Date Sm Let | MS65 | NGC CAC | $1,175,000 |
1841 Seated Dollar | PR64 | PCGS | $141,000 |
1849 Seated Dollar | PR67 | NGC | $129,250 |
1828 $5 Gold | MS64 | PCGS CAC | $499,375 |
1852 $10 Humbert | MS68 | NGC CAC | $1,057,500 |
Most of the coins in this sale were beyond typical, many labeled as CAC or with the + designation. Bidders have become fascinated with the premium quality labels and the added demand for these power coins could lead prices to even higher levels. The gap between Fair Market Value and Plus prices should widen as competition increases.
1943/2 P Full Step Jefferson Nickel MS66+ PCGS CAC sold for $3,818.75 at the Heritage Auctions CSNS U.S. Coin Signature Auction in Chicago, Illinois, April 24-28, 2013

The overall coin market is consistent as we show in this week's LD Wholesale Market Dealer Price Guide. Copper is looking very strong with buyers demanding coins with problem-free surfaces; however, they are willing to pay for accurately graded quality. Even the small size Seated coins are receiving lots of attention with Market prices advancing for specific dates. For example, the 1844 O Half Dime in MS63 is up to $8,950, the 1852 in PR63 rose to $6,750, and the 1858 S Seated Dime in MS63 jumped to $15,250. It is apparent that there has been a lot more money coming into the coin market of late and this has spurred higher prices.
