Coiled Hair Stella Sells for $646,250

While most dealers had a good New Orleans ANA, questions about the fluctuating metal markets remain. What is confusing is that physical metals are enjoying strong demand throughout the world while the commodities markets continue to see lower prices. Many analysts have been stressing the fact that there is a major difference between physical and paper Gold. When you look at the premiums being paid for U.S. Gold coins, it is an obvious assertion. Additionally, dealers are reporting that gold coin sales to customers are currently outweighing gold purchased from customers by a wide margin.
The Stack's Bowers Galleries Auction was a highly successful event with the truly rare 1879 $4 Gold Stella Coiled Hair in PCGS PR64 Cameo realizing $646,250. This classic rarity is one of no more than fifteen known, and while we see the Flowing Hair in auction occasionally, the Coiled Hair is seldom available. Listed below are a few other highlights.

1797 Capped Bust $2 ½ Gold - AU53 PCGS - $105,750
1807 Capped Bust $5 Gold - MS65 NGC - $76,375

This week's Moderns Wholesale Market Dealer Price Guide lists a variety of increases throughout especially in the Proof charts. It looks like the collectors are back and they are after the higher grades. There are a host of advances in Ultra Cameo PR68 and 69 Lincoln Cents, Jefferson Nickels, and Roosevelt Dimes. There are various upward movements for Washington Quarters in MS67 this week as well. The 1935 D is up to $2,775 Market and the 1939 S is $1,550.
