NumisMedia Weekly Market Report
Better Date Modern Coins Advancing
August 5, 2013
Most Modern Gold Eagles are common and trade for their bullion value in grades MS67 to MS69. However, there are a few that are very difficult to locate and carry strong premiums. There are some top Modern coin market makers continually offering to purchase specific $25 Gold Eagles. Buyers are looking for nice original coins, certified preferred, as long as they are not unattractive.
The highly sought after Modern Gold Eagle dates, 1988 through 1992, 1995, 1996, and 2001, carry higher premiums than the more common examples. The 1989 has a Market price of $1,560 in MS69, the 1990 is $1,820, and the 1991 is $2,575. Common date MS69's are trading at $665 wholesale in this week's Moderns Wholesale Market Dealer Price Guide.
In the Modern Buffalo Gold chart, nearly all coins are higher this week compared to the last print issue. Common dates in MS69 are at $1,340 wholesale, and in PR69 the Market price is $1,390.
Proof Lincoln Cents have been steady at present levels with a few of the earlier dates advancing. The 1913 PR65 Red increased to $1,650 Market and the 1915 PR66 BN moved up to $1,825. In most cases, collectors of this series are not as concerned about color (Red, Brown, or Red and Brown) as they are about a coin being even in color toning and having no distracting carbon spots. Nevertheless, collectors are still very aggressive for coins that have that desired eye appeal and are Red in color. When PR65 and higher grades are available, the specialty buyers are out in force and very competitive.
An additional element Proof Lincoln Cent collectors look for is the Cameo designation; the depth and the contrast of the Cameo can lead to very high premiums. While most Cameo coins will trade around the current levels, the 1937 PR66 Red Cameo jumped this past week to $2,175 Market, while the 1938 in the same grade dropped slightly to $1,525.
The market has been quite active for bullion coins as of late, but we are still finding various levels of increasing demand for better date rare coins. Just about anything prior to 1900 and considered a better date will sell in a very short time if it is priced near current Market levels. The following list shows just a few recent Market advances for better date rare coins.
