Stack's Bowers Rarities Highlight ANA

August 19, 2013

Rittenhouse 1792 Half Disme

The Rittenhouse 1792 Half Disme graded MS66 by PCGS realized $793,125 at the Stack's Bowers Galleries official ANA Sale in Chicago

Chicago provided dealers and collectors with a tremendous setting for the ANA World's Fair of Money last week. The ANA presented an array of exhibits, seminars, and meetings, along with a bourse room of world class dealers who shared not only their extensive inventories but their knowledge of numismatics. The majority of dealers reported solid wholesale business with some retail throughout the show.

Legend Numismatics summed it up best; 'It is not the quantity of the public in attendance, it is the quality of their spending.' They sold several high value coins to their customers which made for a very successful show. Many other dealers voiced the same sentiment.

Stack's Bowers Galleries hosted the official ANA Sale and they did not disappoint. One of the main attractions was the Rittenhouse 1792 Half Disme graded MS66 by PCGS. It realized a final bid of $793,125. This coin is in the top three finest certified by PCGS, out of the original mintage of just 1,500 coins. These coins were struck using a hand press and nearly all of them were placed into circulation. A very substantial number of the coins that have survived show significant wear. Thus, the present piece and three other coins, a PCGS Specimen 67, a PCGS MS68, and a NGC MS66, make up the known supply of the high grade rarities.

For Morgan Dollar collectors the highlight was by far the Jack Lee 1889 CC in PCGS MS68. This is the highest grade of this rare date and it brought $881,250. PCGS lists only one other coin grading as high as MS65, while NGC lists one in MS67 and five in MS65. For the Registry collector, the MS68 would be the ultimate highlight of the set.

Collectors of the $10 Gold Indian were delighted to find several high grade rarities in this sale. First, the 1907 Rolled Edge in PCGS MS67 sold for $470,000; the previous Market value was listed at $385,000 and will need to be adjusted. Next, the 1908 S in NGC MS69 realized $182,125. This is the only one certified in this ultimate grade although there are two certified by both PCGS and NGC in MS68. Lastly, the 1933 is the last date in this series and the rarest as well. While there are higher grades certified, availability is the key to this coin as they are in strong collector hands. This PCGS MS64 brought $367,188. Below is a list of other significant highlights.

In this week's issue of the HD Wholesale Market Dealer Price Guide there are increases scattered throughout the charts from Half Dollars through $20 Gold. The majority of advances are for coins that are difficult to locate for the grade. This reinforces the results of the ANA as dealers had a tough time purchasing anything that was rare. Most sellers want a substantial premium over current levels for rarities and/or low pop coins.

Early Bust Halves are a prime target of buyers and there are several increases in this chart. The 1802 in AU58 and MS60 moved higher at $37,500 Market and $42,500, respectively. The Barber Half chart contains numerous advances in circulated grades all the way to MS66. The 1896 O now has a Market price of $12,500 in MS64 and the 1904 S is up to $60,500 in MS66.
