NumisMedia Weekly Market Report

Bust and Seated Coins Driving the Market

December 2, 2013

One of the last major shows of the year is this week in Houston, the Money Show of the Southwest. Dealers from all over the country will take advantage of this opportunity to stock up for the FUN Show. Heritage Galleries will host a major auction that is highlighted with the always popular $4 Stella. This one is an 1879 Flowing Hair $4 Gold certified by PCGS as PR65 Deep Cameo. Over 20% of the coins have either the + designation or CAC label. Some of the potential highlights follow with the current Market price.

Even though the metals continue to falter as the week begins, we are reporting thousands of increases for rare coins. Demand for Bust and Seated coins is quite strong as you will see in this week's HD Wholesale Market Dealer Price Guide. Many of the bidders in the recent Heritage Galleries Eric P. Newman Sale were unsuccessful as prices went well above presale estimates. Several dealers reported that they were outbid for millions of dollars of rarities. This strong demand makes the outlook for rare coins very bright for 2014.

In this week's charts, Bust and Seated Halves are leading the market advances with some dramatic increases. From 1794 through 1839 O the MS63 to MS65 columns are covered with increases. The 1801 Bust Half is now up to $130,000 Market in MS63 and $240,000 in MS64. The latest round of advances shows how strong demand is for original rarities and consumption is much greater than availability. Even with the latest coins from the Newman Collection entering the market, many of them will be put away for a very long time.

The Bust Dollar chart is also showing numerous increases with many dates higher in various Mint State grades. The 1796 is up to $280,000 in MS64 and the 1797 10x6 Stars is at $275,000 in the same grade. The 1801 jumped in MS64 and MS65 to $107,500 and $270,000, respectively.
