NumisMedia Weekly Market Report
Three Coins for $9.87 Million
January 13, 2014
Heritage Platinum Night at this year's FUN Show opened with the 1787 Brasher Doubloon realizing $4,582,500. Many dealers feel this was a very conservative price and could have easily eclipsed the $7 million mark. This coin is graded MS63 by NGC and also has the CAC label. It will definitely headline a major collection in the near future.
Next on the list of the foremost rarities was the 1913 Liberty Head Nickel. This is best known as the Hawaii Five-O star; it is certified by NGC as PR64 and CAC also agreed with the grade. The selling price was $3,290,000. With two of the original five coins held by the Smithsonian and the ANA, it may be some time before one comes up for auction again.
The 1927 D $20 Saint Gaudens was the third tremendous rarity in this Heritage sale and it is the key to the series. It is one of those very elusive coins that are rarely seen on the market. This one is certified by NGC as MS66 and it sold for $1,997,500. This coin was once owned by Dr. Steven Duckor who continues to amaze even the top dealers across the country with his fantastic ability to identify top quality U.S. Gold.

There were many other highlights with some commanding strong premiums over current levels. However, there were also some coins that sold at relatively bargain prices. The buyers appeared to be a little on the conservative side. Many seem to be waiting on the direction of metals and the overall economy.
From common dates to better dates, most dealers are looking for Silver Dollars for their customers. Many of the better to rare dates are drying up and prices are not the problem. Locating the right coins is a major challenge in this market. There are numerous increases in this week's Morgan and Peace Dollar charts and the only reason there are not more for the rare dates is that they are not available.
