Rare Date MS70 Modern Gold Eagles Advance

July 28, 2014

Gold bullion is holding above the $1,300 mark in morning trading but it is down from its recent high of just above $1,320. One ounce Proof Gold Eagles in the OGP are maintaining their strong premiums, currently at $1,528 among dealers. Proof Silver Eagles are unchanged at the $50 level. Circulated Silver Dollars have a strong following and are trading at $26,925 per bag of one thousand.

While Gold is down since the last Moderns issue, we are finding many of the low pop, better date Gold Eagles to be in strong demand. The following list shows the current Market price for better dates and the previous Market.

Taking another look back at the Heritage Auctions Sale of the Eugene H. Gardner Collection, the 1861 S Seated Dime graded by NGC as MS66 and stickered by CAC sold for $49,937.50. With an original mintage of just 172,500 coins, it qualifies for better date status. However, the total number of coins certified by PCGS and NGC indicates that this coin is much rarer than many would think. There are a total of only 59 coins certified in all circulated grades and the number of Mint State coins certified is a mere 16.

With only two coins certified in the highest grade of MS66, this coin has seen quite a rise in Market price over the last eight years. In January 2006, the Market price was $16,250, and today it is $34,500; that is an increase of over 110%. With only four 1861 S Seated Dimes certified above MS63, it is extremely unlikely that you will be able to find one at anything close to current levels. Noting once again that Gardner Collection specimen had a CAC sticker, perhaps the recent realized price was a bargain.
