NumisMedia Weekly Market Report
PR55 1804 Dollar Realizes $1,880,000
August 18, 2014
Last week we reported on Heritage Auctions sale from the recently completed ANA in Rosemont, Illinois. This week we shift our focus to Stack's Bowers Galleries, the second of the two official auctioneers for the show.
1795 Flowing Hair Dollar Two Leaves NGC SP64 sold for $822,500 in Stack's Bowers Galleries Chicago ANA Auction, August 6, 2014
|
The premiere coin of the Stack's Bowers sale was the 1804 Bust Dollar Class III certified by NGC as PR55; it brought $1,880,000. This coin always creates a sensation whenever it is displayed or sold. The 1795 Flowing Hair Dollar Two Leaves is a spectacular coin certified by NGC as SP64; this coin sold for $822,500. Below are some of the other highlights from this sale.
Date/Denomination | Grade | Price Realized |
1793 Wreath Cent Lettered Edge | PCGS MS64 BN CAC | $270,250 |
1916 D Mercury Dime | PCGS MS66 FB | $58,750 |

1866 S $20 Gold No Motto | NGC MS61 | $188,000 |
There were many coins in both the Heritage Auctions and Stack's Bowers Galleries sales that had the CAC sticker and/or the + designation. In major sales these coins receive most of the attention and the premiums can be rather substantial especially for true rarities. CAC rarities have become extremely prized by advanced collectors.
The 1964-2014 Kennedy Gold Half Dollars have been shipped by the Mint. Collectors and dealers are sending them to the grading services for certification and the buy/sell prices have been fluctuating since the day they were released at ANA. Raw coins from the Mint have been ranging around $1,375 to $1,450; the certified coins have been offered for $2,800 to $4,200 in PR70 depending on the label. Again, prices will continue to change on a daily basis as the number of coins entering the market increases.
After we ran the NumisMedia Weekly Market Report last week it was brought to our attention that the consignor of the 1792 Silver Center Cent that was auctioned by Heritage Auctions used an agent to buy back the coin. This was done without Heritage's prior knowledge and means the coin did not sell for $1,997,500; however, Heritage did point out that the actual under bidder would have paid $1,880,000, still a substantial amount for this rarity.
