Dealers Kept Busy with Auctions in New York and Baltimore
November 7, 2016
This past week was a hectic one with two major auctions beginning with the Heritage Auctions Signature Sale in New York. The highlight of the sale was certainly the 1920 S $20 Gold Saint Gaudens graded PCGS MS65 with the CAC sticker. There are two coins at PCGS grading higher in MS66, but it is hard to imagine them being any better than this coin. This MS65 Double Eagle realized $517,000, a final price that should thrill the owners of the MS66s.
Another extreme rarity in this Heritage Auctions sale was the 1870 S Seated Dollar in NGC XF40. There is just one Mint State coin certified by either service, PCGS MS62, and there are presumably only 12 coins known. This XF40 Seated Dollar sold for $434,750. Below are some of the other highlights from this sale.

Next up was the Stack's Bowers Galleries auction in Baltimore. Rarities Night featured one of the outstanding rarities in the Buffalo Nickel series; the 1924 S in PCGS MS66+ is the highest certified by PCGS, although there is one in MS67 by NGC. This coin brought $105,750 and will certainly lead to adjustments in the price guides. The following list of highlights are just a few of the rarities sold in Baltimore.
