NumisMedia Weekly Market Report
Holiday Mode or Bargain Shopping?
November 27, 2017
Thanksgiving week typically signals the beginning of holiday trading for dealers as the year winds down. But with prices falling in many series throughout the year, it appears that some dealers have shifted toward bargain hunting as other dealers are trying to raise cash.
Prices for GSA Morgan Dollars from the Carson City Mint have drifted lower in the past few months. Activity has picked up recently yet still at discounted prices. While various GSA Carson City Dollars have significant populations in MS65 and lower grades, there are many that are quite rare, especially in the Prooflike and Deep Mirror Prooflike grades. The following dates have declined over the last month and may represent today's bargains.
1880 CC GSA Morgan Dollar MS64+ Prooflike NGC CAC is available at the Heritage Auctions FUN U.S. Coins Signature Sale in Tampa, Florida, January 3-8, 2018

This week's Moderns Wholesale Market Dealer Price Guide contains a long list of declines for Proof Sets, mostly the Silver sets. From 1992 to date, prices have been falling due to mass dealer discounting over the last few weeks. The 1994 and 1996-2010 Silver Proof Sets and the 1994, 1996 and 1997 Silver Premier Proof Sets are all lower. These reduced prices may entice collectors to purchase these sets for the holidays.
The Kennedy Half Dollars chart was active this past month with various adjustments in both directions. The most significant change was the 1964 A/H PR68 Deep Cameo which advanced to $11,750. This is a very difficult coin to find in this grade with just 29 total coins certified in PR68 Deep Cameo and just three in PR69, and there are multitudes of Kennedy Half Dollar collectors. Also up this week, the 1967 SMS in DC69 is now at $14,250 Market. There is only one coin certified by NGC in this grade.
The metals have moved higher of late; Gold is again testing the $1,300 mark, currently at $1,296.50 in morning trading, and Silver is at $17.09. Bags of 90% Silver are trading at $12,000 and Silver Dollars VG and better are slightly over $22,000 per bag. One ounce Proof Gold Eagles in the OGP are wholesaling at $1,335.
