NumisMedia Weekly Market Report
Long Beach Expo and Ship of Gold Attract Large Crowds
February 26, 2018
Long Beach week proved to be excellent for most of the dealers as this was easily the best attended Long Beach Expo in many years. Several major displays and events attracted much of the attendees, but the S.S. Central America exhibit was the main attraction. Now known as the "Ship of Gold", this astonishing presentation was highlighted by over 30 ingots from the most recent salvage; this portion of recovered gold was insured for $40 million.
The Heritage Auctions sale was also well attended and drew a large number of bidders. Many were there to bid on the ultra-rare 1875 $10 Gold in NGC AU50 which ultimately sold for $372,000. Even though this coin had an original mintage of just 120, it is believed that there are only about ten to twelve coins known to exist. There are four reported certified in AU50 and another four in grades as high as AU55.

This Heritage Auctions Sale was heavy in rare dated $10 Gold Liberty coins, and many of the grades sold had not traded for quite some time. It is also important to note that some of these coins realized strong bids even though they were lower grades, a few as low as Very Fine while most were in the AU grades.
