NumisMedia Weekly Market Report
Opportunities in the GSA Carson City Dollar Market
March 19, 2018
There has been a definite drop in activity in the GSA Carson City Dollar market over the last year. The market makers have been very quiet and this has created a long list of declines in the marketplace. Fewer dealers are supporting this series and it appears that collectors have been sellers rather than buyers. NGC certified GSA black holder coins are plentiful at coin shows and in major auctions. During this downturn prices have fallen for many of the previously active dates. The following list of GSA Dollars is just a few that have decreased in the last year.
Date | Grade | January 2017 Market | Current Market |
1879 CC GSA | NGC MS64 | $12,500 | $10,850 |
1880 CC GSA | NGC MS66 | $6,850 | $5,450 |
1882 CC GSA | NGC MS66 | $1,650 | $1,200 |
1883 CC GSA | NGC MS66 | $1,025 | $760 |
1885 CC GSA | NGC MS66 | $2,800 | $1,975 |
1890 CC GSA | NGC MS63 | $5,850 | $5,425 |

The Whitman Baltimore Expo begins this week and Stack's Bowers Galleries hosts the official auction. One of the potential highlights at the Rarities Night session is a 1910 $20 Gold Saint Gaudens in NGC PR66+; this is one of two coins certified by NGC at this grade with an additional 10 coins listed higher. The current Market value is $87,500. There were only 167 Proof coins minted that year but most of them were melted due to low demand. It is estimated that only 60-75 coins still exist in all grades.
1910 $20 Saint Gaudens NGC PR66+ is available at the Stack's Bowers Galleries Whitman Baltimore Expo Auction in Baltimore, Maryland, March 21-23, 2018

Indian Cents and Lincoln Cents are mixed in this week's LD Wholesale Market Dealer Price Guide. There are some increases, mostly in dates and grades where collectors are seeing opportunities, where prices have been discounted over the last year or so. The 1868 Indian Cent in MS64 Red is higher at a Market price of $1,225 and the 1898 in MS66 Red is now at $1,675.
There are several increases in the Lincoln Cent chart as buyers are looking for early mint marked Red and Brown or Red coins that have room to advance. The 1909 S VDB in MS65 Red is higher at $3,775; buyers want nice coins for the grade at this level. The 1918 S in MS64 Red is up to $1,425; the next higher grade is valued at $7,150 so the MS64 grade looks like a bargain if it is a coin with good eye appeal.
