NumisMedia Weekly Market Report
Metals Flying High with ANA Near
August 5, 2019
The metals have jumped considerably over the last week; Gold is currently at $1,466.50 and Silver is at $16.46. The rising metals could lead to some very positive dealer sales and auction results at the upcoming ANA World's Fair of Money in Chicago (Rosemont, IL) August 13-17. Heritage Auctions and Stack's Bowers Galleries will co-host the official auctions at this major annual event.
Highlighted from the Stack's Bowers Galleries sale, the famous 1894 S Barber Dime in PCGS PR63 with the CAC sticker is a date with a tremendous history. There were just 24 coins originally minted of this date but only 9 coins exist today. The highest graded is a PR66 which last sold at FUN in 2016 for nearly $2 million. The NumisMedia FMV is currently listed at $737,500 in PR63 but should be revised upward after this sale. The present coin has not been on the market for over 30 years and was once in the collection of Dr. Jerry Buss.

The Stack's Bowers sale will also feature the collection of Anthony J. Taraszka, 1795 to 1804, $10 Gold Eagles. Beginning in the late 1980's, Mr. Taraszka's interest grew to the point of him now being known as the ultimate authority in Early $10 Gold. His collection was completed in 2016 and contains a total of 32 die varieties. The results of this sale will help determine numerous updated values for coins that have not traded in many years.
The 1804 Crosslet 4 is the last year of this type and is extremely popular. Most issues found are damaged or cleaned so this coin in PCGS MS61 is very rare. PCGS has certified 7 coins in MS61 with just 2 higher. The current FMV for the MS61 is $94,250.
The 1795 9 Leaves in PCGS MS63 is nearly the finest known; the Pogue MS63+ sold in 2015 for $1,057,500. The FMV for the MS63 is currently at $1,007,500. Duplicating the Taraszka collection of Early $10 Gold would be quite difficult with so many finest-known-for-the-variety coins included.
Please check the Stack's Bowers Galleries website for a complete listing of auction lots for the ANA World's Fair of Money.
And for the Heritage Auctions ANA Sale, Platinum Night has numerous rarities available including the 1884 Trade Dollar in PCGS PR63. There are only 10 known, although PCGS and NGC have a combined population of 13 coins listed. There is just one PR63 in a PCGS holder with 4 more grading higher; the PR67 is the highest PCGS certified. This coin last traded at FUN 2017 for $423,000.

Also available is the 1870 S Seated Dollar in NGC XF40 which has a current FMV of $575,000. There are only 9 coins known to exist and the highest grade certified is MS62 by PCGS, the only Mint State 1870 S certified. This coin once belonged in the Queller Collection and sold for $805,000 back in 2008.
The nearly perfect and up for bid 1907 $10 Gold Indian Wire Rim in NGC MS68 has no price reference to this point. The FMV for the MS67 is currently at $260,000 with a total of 12 coins certified, and NGC has 2 coins listed in MS68 and a MS69.
