Major Auctions Attracting Rarities and High Prices

May 3, 2021

The most recent Heritage Auctions sale again took place at their Dallas headquarters; this was slotted in calendar for Central States Numismatic Society Convention, canceled because of Covid protocols. Heritage always manages to acquire some fantastic rarities to attract potential buyers, and again, there were coins that sold for over a million dollars, a common theme from many of the recent major auctions.

1776 Continental Dollar CURENCY Silver certified by NGC VF35 and CAC

This is one of the most notable items in this sale, it was the first silver dollar struck for the United States, and it always attracts lots of interest. This coin is one of two known examples of this variety and it brought $1.14 million in this Heritage sale. Most early Continental dollars were made of pewter, the silver issues were not discovered until around the year 1800. This coin was not known until 1987 when Stack’s handled the estate of coin dealer Don Corrado Romano.

1866 Seated Dollar No Motto certified by PCGS PR63+ and CAC

This is the only 1866 No Motto Seated Dollar available to collectors; the only other known coin is at the Smithsonian Institution (certified PCGS PR65 Deep Cameo). This PR63+ last sold at auction in 2005 when it brought $1.2+ million; this current sale it realized $1.05 million. Seems like this coin could have brought much more, it is one of the rarest coins and only lacks the publicity of the 1804 Dollar, the 1913 Nickel, and the 1894 S Dime.

1870 CC $20 Gold certified by NGC XF45

The 1870 CC $20 Gold is the key date for the Carson City series. Over the last several years this date has sold in VF and XF at lower levels due to a much softer coin market. Many of those coins were over dipped (cleaned) and a lack of competition created lower prices. However, our current market is hot, and there are plenty of buyers seeking rarities that are original without major distractions. The highest grade with a listed value for the 1870 CC is AU55 with an FMV of $572,000. This XF45 realized $384,000 (the XF40 has a current FMV of $312,500). Below are some of the other major highlights from the Heritage Auctions Sale.
