NumisMedia Weekly Market Report
Auctions Continue to Attract Serious Buyers
November 8, 2021
The PCGS Members Only Show was recently held at a new location in San Diego at the Omni Hotel. Along with this trading event Legend Rare Coin Auctions featured their Regency Auction 48 with some outstanding top graded rarities including the Boylston Collection of Seated Halves. While the Seated Half series is a difficult one to collect by date because of the long list of dates, collectors of this series are passionate and demanding in their pursuit. While some of the coins included in this sale are not overly expensive, most of them are very difficult to locate in nice original condition. Many of these dates are just not readily available in the high grades listed in this sale.
1866 S Seated Half Dollar No Motto certified by PCGS MS65+ and CAC
This a tough date to acquire in top grades; there are only eight Mint State coins certified by PCGS and this is the second highest graded. A PCGS MS67+ coin sold in January of this year for $156,000. The MS65+ Seated Half in this sale realized $73,438 after being sold in a 2014 sale for $70,500. The original mintage for this date was 60,000, but a total tally of coins certified in the circulated grades is only 300. It is also a difficult date to locate in original condition with unblemished surfaces.

1776 $1 Continental CURRENCY certified by PCGS MS63 and CAC
The Continental Dollars were struck in three different compositions: silver, brass, and pewter. This one is struck in pewter. They were originally thought to have been minted in New York or Philadelphia, but since there are no official records authorizing Congress to produce them, the more updated theory is that they were actually minted in Europe. This coin brought $126,313; the last time one of these examples sold in this grade was over ten years ago and it realized $115,000. There are only three coins finer, all MS64, with one of those selling for $223,250 back in 2012. Below are some of the other highlights from the Legend Rare Coin Auctions Regency 48.
