NumisMedia Weekly Market Report

Dragging Bullion Slows Retail Sales

June 13, 2022

The Whitman Coin & Collectibles Expo in Baltimore concluded this past week and dealers were left with some mixed reactions. Retail trading was well off expectations, however, dealer wholesale trading was still rather active. Across the charts the coin market is steady in the majority of the major series, and in all grades, even though there was some resistance reported at the current levels.
Stack's Bowers Galleries hosted lot viewing for the official Expo Auction which will be conducted this week at their California offices. Their June Sale includes a long list of Morgan Dollars in high grades, both in PCGS and NGC, but the thrust of the attention should be in the U.S. Gold lots. There are many Charlotte and Dahlonega examples that will be of great interest to dealers and collectors alike.
1892 S Morgan Dollar certified by PCGS MS64 and CAC

The 1892 S Morgan Dollar is one of the top 5 rarities in this series, and is especially sought after in MS64 and higher. The original mintage was 1.2 million coins, but there are only 125 total Mint State coins certified by PCGS and NGC. There is a single MS68 by PCGS with only 37 coins grading MS64 to MS67+. The last MS64 or higher to appear in a major auction was the lone MS68, which sold in a Stack’s Bowers Sale in late 2020 for $630,000. The current listed CAC value for the MS64 is $215,000.

1904 $20 Gold certified by PCGS MS67

While the 1904 $20 Gold is a very common date with over 6 million coins minted, there are only five total in MS67 with none certified higher. When a coin has such spectacular surfaces and is among the highest certified, buyers will turn out in force. The current FMV for this date and grade is $78,980; the last one sold at auction in 2019 for $73,438. Below are some of the other potential favorites from the Stack’s Bowers Galleries June Sale.
