Bass Collection Fascinates at Long Beach

October 3, 2022

A successful Long Beach Expo is typically a good sign that there will be an active coin market for the rest of the year. With metals at what analysts feel are very reasonable current levels, and the coin market readying for an improving last quarter, the market is looking solid and buyers are beginning to jump back in. From what we have seen at the major auctions, there is certainly plenty of money to spend, and the coin market is ranking far above any other investment tool out there right now. While not recommending coins and bullion, simply take a look at the recent results of the stock market and make your own comparisons.

Heritage Auctions was extremely busy at the Long Beach Expo, first off showing lots for the Signature Sale which will take place at their Dallas headquarters October 7-9. They also had viewing for the Harry W. Bass JR Core Collection Part I which included 106 lots of true rarities. This sale actually culminated during the convention on September 29. Proceeds from this sale will benefit the Harry W. Bass JR Foundation which provides funding for many worthwhile charities, especially in the Dallas area. Below are just some of the rarities from this sale, most of which have not traded for decades.

1821 $5 Gold certified by PCGS PR65 Cameo and CAC

This 1821 Proof $5 Gold is one of just two known coins to survive, the other Proof coin is in the Smithsonian Institution. This coin is certified by PCGS as PR65 Cameo and also has CAC approval, it realized a fantastic $4,620,000. Many of these early coinages have die cracks or clashes, but this coin is clean with wonderful eye appeal. It was previously preserved by such notable collectors as Newcomb, Col. Green, King Farouk, and Norweb prior to landing in the Bass Collection.

1804 $10 Gold Plain 4 certified by PCGS PR63

There were only four coins struck for the 1804 $10, produced solely to be included in the 1804 Proof set with the Dollar. There are only three coins known today, the other two are certified by PCGS as PR65+ Deep Cameo and PR64. This PCGS PR63 realized a seemingly reasonable price of $2,280,000. While we had no previous listing for this grade, PCGS has it listed for $3,000,000.
