FUN Show Jumpstarts the New Year

January 9, 2023

After a rather spectacular FUN Show, the question most dealers were contemplating, ‘will 2023 be a bullion year or a rare coin year’, or a combination of the two? Rare coin prices at the show were not advanced, in fact, for the most part, dealers were buying and selling coins at prices relative to about 10% below current Market values. However, the important point to take away from the show is that ALL dealers seem to be buying, so the show had a near perfect air to it. Most shows have buyers and sellers, and they are usually separated by whether the dealer needs new inventory or needs to sell off some. The perfect balance of buying and selling is quite rare at a show, but that is what many dealers reported from a very active FUN Show where attendance broke recent records.

Gold has reached recent highs, at around $1,872 an ounce, and buyers are plentiful, although they not going crazy at this point. Most buyers are used to seeing a sell-off of sorts, thus waiting for the market to fall lower or maintain and push toward the $1,900 mark.

Heritage Auctions hosted the Official FUN Sale, displaying auction lots at the show, with most of the sale taking place this week at their Dallas Headquarters. However, the FUN Show was the place to auction the latest segment of the Harry Bass Jr Collection. This was designated the Core Collection Part II and contained 103 very impressive lots, with an abundance of rarities. This part of the Heritage Sale had four coins selling for over $1 million with another handful above the $800,000 mark. Proceeds from this sale will benefit numerous Dallas-based nonprofit organizations. Below are some of the highlights from this important sale, and be sure to check out the rest of the FUN Sale this week by Heritage Auctions in Dallas.

1870 S $3 Gold certified by PCGS SP50

All the San Francisco minted coins in 1870 were to be placed in the cornerstone of the Second San Francisco Mint, which would indicate that there is only a single coin of each denomination in existence. However, the Seated Dollar and the Half Dime (which is included in the Heritage sale this week) have traded in the past, so there are either duplicates of these unique coins or they were not included in the cornerstone at the time. This 1870 S $3 Gold was first known in 1907 when the coin was advertised in The Numismatist. Of added significance is the engraving of 893 scratched on the top reverse of the coin, which is thought to refer to the fineness of the Feather River gold deposit the coin was struck from. Since this is the only coin available, the engraving adds even more mystique to this example which brought a record $5,520,000.

1795 $10 Gold 9 Leaves certified by PCGS MS64

The 1795 $10 Gold has two varieties, the 9 Leaves and the 13 Leaves. The 9 Leaves is the rarer of the two with a mintage of 500 and only 18 to 22 coins known to exist. This MS64 is the finest known and brought $2,100,000 in this sale. This coin was acquired from another well-known Gold expert, Mike Brownlee, in a private sale back in 1971. An interesting note, the Pogue coin in PCGS MS63+ with CAC sold at FUN a year ago for $3,360,000.
