Stack's Bowers ANA Results Confirm Active Market

The final results from the two major auctions coming out of the most recent ANA confirms the coin market remains very active, especially among dealers. Prices are still mostly at discounted levels from previous highs, but dealers seem to be willing to compete for wantlisted items or deepen their inventory if prices make sense.
The Stack's Bowers Galleries ANA sale had a wide variety of rarities up for bid. There was a large group of Carson City coinage, with better dates in Seated Quarters, Seated Halves, and Morgan Dollars. The sale also featured Carson City Gold in $5, $10, and $20 denominations, and bidding was aggressive. Included in the US Gold were several noteworthy examples from the Charlotte and Dahlonega Mints. 1825/4/1 $5 Gold Capped Bust certified by PCGS PR62 and CMQ
The 1825/4/1 $5 Gold in Proof had an original mintage of only three coins with two listed in the population reports; this PCGS PR62, once in the Harry W. Bass Jr. Collection, now with the exclusive CMQ label, just realized $1,080,000. The last time this coin sold was in the 2023 Heritage FUN Sale for $630,000; now, that seems like the bargain of the decade. The other coin listed in the pop reports is a PCGS PR67 Cameo with the CAC sticker that was previously owned by Parmelee, Eliasberg, and Farouk; it sold most recently at the Stack's Bowers sale in August 2022 for $4,080,000.

1870 CC $10 Gold certified by PCGS AU55 and CMQ
With an original population of nearly 6,000 coins, the 1870 CC does not appear to be overly rare. However, even though the population reports list over one hundred coins, it is believed that the actual total is somewhere between 50-75. The highest certified is a PCGS AU58 which was last sold in a Stack's Bowers sale back in August of last year for $1,080,000. The PCGS AU55 in this sale realized $420,000. There is a total of seven coins certified in AU55 and another eleven in AU53. This date and denomination has been seldom seen at auction over the last few decades, whereas the same date in $20 Gold is available on a frequent basis.
